Welcome to Prairie Oak Ranch, a total horsemanship training centre with a focus on cutting.
Situated near Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, the ranch facilities include an indoor heated arena and barn, outdoor square and round pens and plenty of open ranch land on which to ride and enjoy your horse. The ranch staff also accesses the amazing riding country in the Alberta foothills for day rides and overnight trips with students.
The instructional program at Prairie Oak Ranch offers beginner, intermediate and advanced riders of all ages the opportunity to advance their riding skills. The program is also geared to design individual programs for riders and horses to prepare them to be competitive in the cutting pen.
Owner/manager Cub Wright is the riding instructor at Prairie Oak, and the 2008 Canadian Open Cutting Champion, the first woman ever to hold the title.

My Erin in Red 1970 - 2012 PDF Print E-mail

It is with much sadness I pass on to all of you of the loss of a dear friend and former student Erin Bezac ( nee Moynihan)

I met Erin many years ago when she had decided to run for stampede queen. She came for lessons, we attended her dinners, speeches and were present when she was crowned. She made us all proud and represented the stampede to the fullest. She followed her dream of riding cutting horses and won numerous buckles and awards. She then met Stafford the love of her life and together they raised two lovely sons Blade and Cooper.

Over the years we have shared many good times. During the last few years both busy in our own lives we didn’t see each other as often but never were we far from each other’s thoughts. My last visit was in October of the 2011 futurity where you would always find Erin timing and when this photo was taken.

Erin, I will forever love you and miss you. May you be amongst great people and horses in the heavens above

Prairie Oak Cutters Start Off in Fine Fashion at ACHA Fund Raiser PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 20 April 2012 08:36

The ACHA fund raiser although lower in numbers was a great show for the cutters at Prairie Oak Ranch.

Margaret Dawson on her new gelding Cavello Cat had some great runs but in the end the cows won, but  eventually she got in sync with her gelding and pulled off a 72 to give her second place in the 15  amateur. She is pumped now and ready to head to Olds to the Canadian Finals.

Dave Cuming captured  his first Never Won a Buckle so he has a buy in to the ride off in the fall at the Cow Horse Supreme.

Cindy Remington was the 2000 Limit Aggregate Champion on her good gelding Gypsy Red Light

Maureen McCarthy picked up a third place in the 2k on Saturday on her gelding Nik

Thank you Gerry, Brad, Lorne and Dustin who stayed along with myself to the end to help the cutters.

Good luck to all at the Canadian Finals.

Winter Series comes to an end for the 2011/2012 season PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 20 April 2012 08:46

A mild winter definitely added to the success of the Silver Slate Winter Series along with the hard work of the Santangelo Family.

The numbers varied but there seemed to be an average of about 60 works each show. This Winter Series is a great opportunity for the new cutters to get used to their horses.

Maureen McCarthy was the winner of the 2000 Limit Aggregate Buckle. This was a high light for Maureen and her horse Pepnics Colonel.

Congrats to all the other competitors

What happened in Vegas just can’t stay in Vegas! PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 March 2012 09:11

With trailers loaded in a departing blizzard, Cub, Cindy, Chelsea, Lexi, Kelly, and Greg headed south on Valentine’s Day February 14 2012. Dave and Gord had already flown south and were planning to meet us in Vegas.

The first night out was a stop over in Great Falls for Greg and his wife Maureen while Cub and crew made Idaho Falls. The roads varied from good to bad and all types in between.

Tuesday we arrived at South Point Las Vegas and were met by Gord and Dave who helped us move in with our horses and settle in for the next three days.

Two pens were in use. This made it a bit more challenging juggling from one pen to another helping the various students in their perspective classes.

Dave and Greg set the pace marking a 73.5 and a 72 in the 15,000 Amateur.
KellyKelly and Cindy Cindymaking their debut at the NCHA level tied with a 68 putting them in the crying hole. Gord took a 72 in the 5000 NH NP. Like all cutting it was chicken today feathers tomorrow and the scores varied, as did the cheques, but money was collected each day. So we couldn’t leave this news in Vegas?

The morning of February 19 we were loaded leaving Gord behind to head to Queen Creek with Mike Woods but not before we warmed up and schooled his horse before we left.
